just the other day, jessica coates and i were playing around with the youtube remixer available through youtube test tube. it utilises the rich internet app premier express, developed by adobe and released on photobucket earlier this year.
If you’ve ever uploaded from your cell phone, wished for an easy way to add titles and transitions, or just wanted to remix your own videos, Remixer is a great place to play. It lets you assemble your new video in an easy drag-and-drop timeline, and then publish it right back to YouTube. Your original videos will stay exactly the same.
the rich media app was also used on mtv.com for their mtv video remix section. what might seem to be a really progressive step by the major labels and mtv amounts to little because, although it allows use of commercial content, such as video, audio and photos of major artists, it is only within the context of their remix competitions. to date this has included kelly clarkson, nelly furtado and ti.
both are pretty limited in their scope however. youtube remixer only allows users to use their own content (which they’ve uploaded). content owned by other users cannot be mashed into remixes. also, unlike photobucket, there is no external video or music available (yet) for users to incorporate into their uploaded films.
mtv has selected video, film and audio content associated with the remix contests that they have operated or are operating. you can’t mix and match between past contest’s content or user-generated mixes from that content. each contest is a pool of ghettoised content
but adobe and its partners are not the only ones letting users mash up on screen. yahoo’s new acquisition jumpcut (which does look suspiciously like revver), a popular video remixing community. now of course there is speculation that like google video’s roll into youtube, so too will yahoo video be rolled into a symbiotic relationship with jumpcut,
ps. by far this is not a comprehensive list of online remixing platforms. others such as motionbox and exist as well. how they will play out in the rise of remix is yet to be seen.
